The Music of H. Leslie Adams is featured at the Smithsonian Institution. The complete song cycle Nightsongs (on texts by African American poets) is given a first Washington, D.C. performance. This cycle has become a concert favorite of both singers and audiences, and embodies the composer at his most lyrical and romantic. The six songs are "Prayer" and "Drums of Tragedy" (both on texts by Langston Hughes, 1902-57) "The Heart of a Woman" (text by Georgia Douglas Johnson, 1880-1966); "Night Song" (text by Clarissa Scott Delany, 1901-27); "Sence You Went Away" (text by James Weldon Johnson, 1871-1938); and "Creole Girl" (text by Morgan Collins, 1919).
The artists performing this work are Darryl Taylor, Countertenor, and Maria Corley, pianist. Both Taylor and Corley have recorded Adams' work on best-selling CDs. The respective recordings are Love Rejoices: Songs of H. Leslie Adams, and Twelve Etudes - both on Albany Records.
